Outpatient Suboxone® Detox Treatment

Why Choose Suboxone® Detox?

Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone) can help people to stop using and purchasing street drugs, but buprenorphine itself is an opioid. Because each Suboxone® dose stays in the body for weeks, traditional methods for detoxing off Suboxone® can result in over a month of pain, sleeplessness, anxiety and other withdrawal symptoms.

At the Coleman Institute, we understand your fear of replacing one addiction with another and the overwhelming challenge that you face in trying to detox off of Suboxone® or other forms of buprenorphine. That’s why we’ve developed a powerful way to help you detox safely and quickly, without disrupting your entire life that you’ve worked so hard to recover.

It’s also important to note that for some people who are stable on Suboxone®, there is no reason to try to get off of it. However, for people who are ready for this change, we have created a unique process to help them transition from Suboxone® over to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using the non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone.

How Does the Coleman Method For Suboxone® Detox Work?

The Coleman Institute carefully adapted our Accelerated Opioid Detox program to meet the unique needs of people who are ready to come off buprenorphine. By using a carefully crafted combination of medicines and sedatives, we’re able to completely remove the opioids attached to your brain receptors. Then, because Suboxone® stays in your body for so much longer than other opiates, we extend our outpatient treatment to 8 days instead of the shorter period used for shorter-acting opioids.

After the detox is complete, our team works with you to treat any post-acute withdrawal symptoms to ensure that you’re on the best path to complete healing. Since our outpatient treatment takes days instead of weeks or months, there is very little disruption to your life and we see much higher rates of detox completion compared to those who attempt to spend weeks going through self-detox. Patients who live near one of our offices are able to spend nights at home in the comfort of their own bed. Our team works with you to treat any longer-term withdrawal symptoms after detox to ensure that you’re on the best path to complete healing. From there, you’re on the road to long-term recovery as quickly as possible.

How Does Suboxone® Use Become Dependence?

Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, was originally created as a safer pain management medication than morphine or heroin. To prevent misuse, it was combined with naloxone, which is an opioid antagonist. Together, buprenorphine and naloxone are known under the branded medication names like Suboxone® and Zubsolv®. Today, Suboxone® is widely used as a treatment for opioid dependence by transitioning an individual from illegal street opioids, to this legal (when prescribed) alternative.

Because buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, Suboxone® can activate the brain’s opioid receptors like other opioids do, leading to a halt in natural endorphin production. Once this Suboxone® dependence is established, stopping abruptly can cause painful withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, Suboxone® is long-lasting, meaning these withdrawal symptoms that can last for weeks.

Facts About Suboxone® Use and Dependence

Many patients have been reluctant to use buprenorphine out of fear that they are replacing one addiction for another. Others are intimidated by the physical and mental challenge that they will undergo when or if they ultimately want to taper off of Suboxone® or other forms of buprenorphine. While it is possible to maintain stability on Suboxone®, many individuals that have been taking it are ready for a change. Buprenorphine can play a useful role in a person’s recovery journey and is helping many patients lead stable lives without using risky street opioids. That said, many individuals who have been using it for a long time are ready for change and find tapering off to be incredibly difficult, because of the lengthy withdrawal symptoms they face.

  • Only 49% of participants reduce prescription painkiller abuse during a 12-week treatment program.
  • In 2011, 21,000+ emergency room visits were for the nonmedical use of buprenorphine products.
  • In 2019, 2.4M adults used buprenorphine products.
  • In 2019, 25% of adults taking buprenorphine products reported misusing them.
  • In early 2022, the FDA issued a warning that buprenorphine products that dissolve in the mouth have been reported to cause tooth decay and other dental problems.
