“I did a detox here almost 4 years ago, and I come in monthly for Vivitrol injections. No relapses, and I’m super confident in my recovery. Brittany, Johnelle, Kristal, and Joan are the best! Honestly everyone here is so caring and kind. I know I wouldn’t be where I am without them. Almost 4 years clean and counting. Thank you all :)! Extremely grateful for everyone here!”

Carolyn Johnson – Richmond, VA, October 2023

“She left Coleman feeling proud of her accomplishment, encouraged and excited for what she felt she could do. At the Coleman Institute they strive to make us all feel deserving of dignity, respect and comfort. I think my granddaughter has a way to go but the Coleman Institute helped me to help her to take advantage of an “it’s time to do this attitude” with speed and as pleasant an experience as possible. She says she is ready. The naltrexone implant will really help.”

How Big a Problem are Opioid Pain Medications in Virginia?

Opioid addiction is a major public health issue in Virginia, and opioid pain medications like Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Percocet®, Tramadol, and others have been a major driver of the problem. People often start out taking these medications for legitimate pain management issues. But because opioids stimulate powerful reward centers in the brain, it is very easy to develop a dependence, and because the withdrawal symptoms are so unpleasant, it is very difficult to stop taking them once a dependence is established.

The Stamford Institute for Economic Policy Research published a policy paper in 2019 using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) that shows a strong correlation between the quadrupling of the clinical use of opioid medications between the years 2000 and 2010 and a 300 percent increase in deaths involving opioid overdose during that period.

Doctors have tried to do their part to reverse the trend by writing fewer prescriptions for opioid pain medications, as this data from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA) shows, but addiction remains a danger for the people who are still getting these prescriptions, and these medications can still be obtained through illegal means.

This 2022 data from the Virginia Department of Health shows the negative impact that opioids are still having on many Virginians:

  • 2,490 total drug overdose deaths in Virginia
  • 79% of drug overdose deaths in Virginia involved opioid pain medications like Fentanyl and Tramadol
  • 22,398 emergency department visits due to drug overdose
  • 412 Virginia infants under 1 year old hospitalized with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) because of maternal opioid use

If you or a friend or family member have been impacted by the opioid crisis in Virginia, know that you are not alone. Call us now at 877-773-3869 or schedule a callback below to learn more about our outpatient Pain Medication Detox.

What To Expect From Our Pain Medication Detox Program In Richmond, VA

Opioid pain medications can be very potent and difficult to detox from, so choosing the right opioid detox program is a crucial step on your path to recovery. We’re here to help you through this process every step of the way. Here’s what to expect if you decide to participate in an outpatient Pain Medication Detox at the Coleman Institute in Richmond, VA:

Getting Started:

Get the process started by calling us now at 877-773-3869 or request a callback from a Care Advocate. During this call, our Care Advocates will answer any and all questions you may have about our unique approach to Pain Medication Detox, and they will also help you schedule the dates of your treatment. Because our detox programs can be completed in as little as 3-8 days, many of our patients choose to start treatment on a Friday to take advantage of the weekend and miss as few days of work as possible. We can typically schedule your treatment within a few days of your call.

Before Your Appointment:

We ask that all of our detox patients stop taking their pain medications 16 to 48 hours before their first scheduled appointment, based on guidance from our physicians. We also ask all detox patients to have a support person with them who can be present for the duration of the detox program and for 48 hours after detox is completed, because patients in detox should not drive a motor vehicle and should be monitored at all times to ensure their safety.

Your First Appointment:

At your initial Pain Medication Detox appointment, you will likely be experiencing mild withdrawal symptoms from stopping the use of your pain medications 16 to 48 hours before the appointment. One of our experienced licensed practitioners will be on hand to give you tailored doses of comfort medications to alleviate these withdrawal symptoms. You will also be treated with micro-dose Naltrexone.

Intermediate Appointments:

Your intermediate Pain Medication Detox appointments will be similar to the first appointment. An experienced practitioner will continue to give you comfort medications tailored to your individual needs, and you will continue to receive micro-dose Naltrexone.

Final Appointment:

At the time of your final detox appointment, you will have made significant progress. You will spend the final day resting comfortably in a private room in our Richmond, VA detox center while the remaining opioids in your brain are gently removed. This process will typically take around 6 to 8 hours, and you will be monitored closely to ensure that your detox is going as it should. After this last appointment, detox is complete and you will be given long-acting Naltrexone to help reduce cravings. Most of our patients find that this is the support they need to help them focus on building healthier habits and living a new.

Why Choose The Coleman Institute For Pain Medication Detox – The Fast And Comfortable Option

Opioid pain medications can be very difficult to stop using. Most people who develop a dependence experience painful, distressing withdrawal symptoms if they attempt to detox without the help of a medical professional. Here are some common options for Pain Medication Detox in the Richmond, VA area:

Self-Detox:

Trying to stop using opioid pain medication on your own after developing a dependence can be uncomfortable and very dangerous. Trying to stop suddenly and go” cold turkey” without help can result in extreme physical discomfort and could even be dangerous. Some people attempt to taper off their dose of opioid medications gradually in an attempt to wean themselves off of it. This is almost never successful. Both methods of self-detox usually result in relapse as the person seeks relief from their withdrawal symptoms. Because of potential safety concerns and the high probability of relapse, we do not recommend that anyone attempt to self-detox from their pain medication.

Inpatient Detox:

Inpatient opioid pain medication detox requires a long stay in a hospital or rehab facility where the patient is monitored by medical professionals and given medication to help with the pain and discomfort of withdrawal. The amount of time the patient is required to stay depends on their condition, but it is not unheard of for a stay in rehab to last upwards of 30 days. Such a long stay in rehab can be very disruptive to daily life and can end up being very expensive.

Ultra Rapid Opioid Detoxification (URD or UROD):

URD/UROD is a method of inpatient detox that involves putting a hospitalized patient under anesthesia and giving them opioid antagonists like Naltrexone intravenously to flush the opioids out of their system. This can be an extremely fast process – drugs can be fully flushed out of a patient’s system in as little as 5 minutes – but it is very expensive and can have serious medical risks. There have been fatalities reported after URD/UROD treatment. Because of the potential dangers, the Coleman Institute has not used Ultra Rapid Opioid Detoxification since 2001.

Methadone or Buprenorphine:

Methadone and Buprenorphine can be an effective method of transitioning a person who is addicted to a dangerous opioid onto a relatively less dangerous and legal (when prescribed) alternative. However, Methadone and Buprenorphine are still opioids. When patients stop taking them, they can still experience withdrawal symptoms, which makes it difficult to stop using the Methadone and Buprenorphine when they decide to take the next step and stop using opioids altogether. Most of our patients say that detoxing off of Methadone or Buprenorphine can be more difficult than withdrawing from other opioids.

Our Outpatient Pain Medication Detox Program:

Our outpatient Pain Medication Detox program uses a tailored regimen of comfort medication alongside Naltrexone Therapy to help patients detox from opioid pain medications as quickly and safely as possible without the risks or costs associated with other inpatient detox programs and with little disruption to the patient’s daily life. Over the past 25 years, we’ve treated over 8,500 patients with a 98% completion rate.
