Why Buprenorphine is Used, and Why People May Want to Detox Off Of It
Buprenorphine is a useful medication used in treatment for opioid addiction. It’s what is known as a “partial opioid agonist,” which means that it activates the same opioid receptors in the brain as other opioids, but to a much less intense degree that doesn’t produce the euphoric effects of other opioids. This makes it quite useful for managing opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms and transitioning patients away from a more dangerous opioid like Fentanyl or Heroin and onto a comparatively safer and legal (when prescribed) alternative.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that Buprenorphine is still an opioid. That means that Buprenorphine is itself an addictive substance, and that trying to stop using it can lead to similar withdrawal symptoms as one would experience when trying to stop using other opioids. In fact, many of our patients who have tried Buprenorphine treatment to treat their opioid addiction have said that detoxing from Buprenorphine can be even more difficult than detoxing from other opioids.

What To Expect From Our Buprenorphine Detox Program In Richmond, VA

Getting Started:

During the initial call, our Care Advocates will answer any questions you may have about outpatient Buprenorphine Detox and help you decide on when you would like to start treatment. We can typically begin treatment within a week – we do not have a waiting list.
Before Your Appointment:
We ask all of our Buprenorphine detox patients to stop taking Buprenorphine 16 to 48 hours before their first scheduled appointment at our Richmond, VA detox center. We also ask that patients be accompanied by a support person who can be present for the duration of the detox program and for 48 hours after detox is completed. Patients in detox should not drive motor vehicles and should be monitored at all times to ensure their safety and comfort.
Your 1st Appointment:
At your 1st appointment, you will be in mild withdrawal from stopping Buprenorphine use 16 to 48 hours before the appointment. A licensed, experienced addiction specialist will give you tailored doses of comfort medications throughout the day to alleviate any uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms you may be experiencing. You will also be given micro-dose Naltrexone to aid in the process.
Intermediate Appointments:
The intermediate days of your Buprenorphine detox will be much like the first day. An experienced practitioner will continue to administer comfort medications for your withdrawal symptoms throughout the day in tailored doses that fit your individual needs and you will also be given micro-dose Naltrexone to aid in the process.
Final Appointment:
When it is time for your final appointment, you will have made significant progress. You can rest comfortably in your own private room at our Richmond, VA detox center while the remaining Buprenorphine is gently removed from your brain, a process that usually takes around 6 to 8 hours. After this appointment, detox is complete. To help you in the weeks after detox, you will be given long-acting Naltrexone to help reduce opioid cravings. Why The Coleman Institute’s Buprenorphine Detox Program – The Fast And Comfortable Option
Most people who take Buprenorphine will not be able to stop using it on their own without experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms and risking relapse. Here are some common Buprenorphine detox options available in the Richmond, VA area:
Self-Detox:
Trying to stop using Buprenorphine on your own can be extremely uncomfortable and dangerous. “Going cold turkey” and stopping your Buprenorphine suddenly with no help from an experienced addiction specialist can result in withdrawal symptoms that are physically and mentally distressing, and could even end up being life-threatening. Some Buprenorphine patients attempt to quit by tapering off their dosage in an attempt to wean themselves off of it. This almost never works. Inpatient Detox:
Inpatient Buprenorphie detox requires a long hospital stay or a long stay in a rehab facility where medical professionals monitor the patient and give them medications to help with the pain and discomfort of withdrawal. The length of the process depends on the patient, but it is not unheard of for inpatient rehab stays to go for as long as 30 days or more. Such a long stay in a facility can be very disruptive to the patient’s life and can be very expensive.
Ultra Rapid Opioid Detoxification (URD or UROD):
Ultra Rapid Detox is an inpatient detox method where a patient is hospitalized, put under general anesthesia, and given opioid antagonist medications like Naltrexone intravenously to flush the drugs out of their system. True to its name, this method can be very fast, flushing the drugs out of the system in as little as 5 minutes, but it is an extremely expensive procedure and there can be serious health risks. There have been some reported fatalities after this treatment. Because of the potential risks, we stopped using this detox method in 2001.
